I stepped through the door and sucked in a large breath as my eyes settled on Willow’s beautiful face. Instantly, I smelled her perfume and her arousal. Both were as delightful as they were enticing. I smiled and took a step forward. She barely returned the smile. As I stepped farther into the lobby, closer to the bar, I took in another breath and my footsteps faltered because an alarming scent wafted into my nose.

Fear.

Worst of all, it came from her.

Confusion tightened my forehead and tensed up my shoulders as I stiffly moved toward the bar a beat slower. I wondered if something was wrong. My senses were on high alert.

As I moved toward the bar, I glanced around the room for signs of trouble. Everything seemed in order. Nothing stood out. At least, nothing obvious. No one so much as glanced in my direction, so as far as I was concerned, my secret was still safe. No one knew I was a shifter.

Not even Willow.

I calmly took my seat at the bar and watched her as she moved along. She barely glanced at me or even acknowledged that I was sitting in my usual spot. I knew she saw me when I came in. Our eyes met. Even if it was for the briefest of moments.

When she finally approached me, I smiled warmly at her. Excitement fluttered through me, along with reservation. She still barely met my gaze. She didn’t even say a word to me as she slapped a glass of beer onto a paper coaster in front of me.

“Hi,” I said.

She barely glanced at me again before moving back down the bar.

“Did I do something?” I muttered to myself, continuing to be confused about what exactly was going on with her.

She interacted with her other customers in the usual way. The only difference was me. And I was damned for not already understanding what I had done. Last I knew, we were on good terms. Nothing made sense. We had sex the night before for crying out loud. She didn’t seem upset when I left her porch right before she went inside.

Maybe the question was what didn’t I do, instead of what I did do? I wondered to myself.

Women were complex. That much was for certain. But that didn’t explain why Willow was suddenly acting so distant toward me. I shivered under the ice of her cold shoulder as she continued serving drinks to the patrons around me, acting like she had all the nights that led up to her visiting with me. The night that changed my life.

All the while, she continued to pretend like I wasn’t sitting in my normal seat waiting for her to speak to me.

I started carefully watching her interact with the customers in case there was one who was making her act the way she was. After all, I wasn’t convinced that I was the issue. I only suspected I was.

Her eyes randomly kept going toward the same direction. The first few times, I chalked it up to being an attentive bartender.
